There's a lot to music that students don't appreciate. Music is both a natural enjoyment and an intellectual activity. To really appreciate music, familiarity with performing and composing music are essential. Music then becomes an event that one participates in actively instead of passively, even as a spectator.
This requires effort on the student's part. Too many students approach the music class as a time essentially for entertainment and not as an educational situation similar to their other studies.

The above comment is negative and assumes that your understanding of music and the acquisition of feelings a listener might have, is less emotionally effective, less intelligent and less meaningful to them.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't an assumption. The realization comes from years of observation. ;-)
ReplyDeleteStudents need motivation and encouragement. There are many aspects that contribute to their attitudes towards school and the arts. I think this is our biggest challenge. How do we dare them to try and motivate them to appreciate the arts more? I don't like making generalized assumptions about students or classifying them in any list or category that could imply they can't. I like to see them as the raw medium. Think of the process you have to go through to create a composition.
